What We Do

Ada Cole

World Horse Welfare was founded way back in 1927 by a lady called Ada Cole. Ada Cole was so upset by the conditions of British horses being sent for slaughter overseas, that she decided to do something about it and so the International League for the Protection of Horses was born. Since 1927 the ILPH has grown, changing its name but not its policies to become one of the world's leading international horse charity, working for a world where horses ‘are used but never abused’.

UK Operations

In the UK we run four Recovery and Rehabilitation Centres and have sixteen full time Field Officers who investigate welfare concerns, offer help and advice, check the horses on the World Horse Welfare loan scheme and attend sales and markets.

International Work

In the world’s poorer countries we run training courses for local horse owners, teaching them about saddle and harness making, hoof care and how to feed, treat and care for their horses.

Campaigning

Thanks to the ILPH, the live export of U.K horses and ponies for meat was stopped. Now under the new name of World Horse Welfare we are still working to ban the long-distance transportation of live horses for slaughter in Europe, among many other activities. In 2004 we collected nearly 85,000 signatures on a petition for our ‘Say NO to Live Exports’ campaign!
